Capitol Hill denizens have another new banh mi destination, this one just as wallet friendly as the also-new Baguette.

Ni Sandwich opened Friday on the 200 block of Broadway across the street from Guanaco’s Tacos Pupuseria. The menu is simple—10 or so of the Vietnamese sandwiches are available, priced no higher than $3.50. Bubble tea is the other thing to order here, also costing $3.50.

What’s the point of opening a new business in a building that is months from being torn down?

Hi Art, I hadn’t heard that building is getting torn down. What’s the story?

Most of that block is being torn down for a new development. http://capitolhillseattle.com/2010/05/03/upcoming-design-review-for-farmers-market-b-of-a-site

Who cares? Broadway needs cheap snacks since Piroshky left us :(

There are plenty of other vacant locations on Broadway to open a restaurant that won’t be demolished in a matter of months. The owner is wasting money by moving into a space that they’re just going to have to vacate later. Restaurants are one of the hardest businesses to get off the ground and be successful. Why make it even harder?

Dumpling Dojo did the same thing. They are now having to vacate even earlier than they had planned with BofA beginning construction of their new location sooner than originally thought. Doesn’t make sense to make life more difficult for yourself.

My guess is they got a seriously dirt-cheap lease that made it worthwhile. It’s just a sandwich counter, nothing elaborate that would require sinking a lot of money into the property.

Agreed. Dirt-cheap lease, and you basically need bread, meat, a hot plate and a cutting board and it’s move-in ready. Plus, if the business takes off, then I bet they’d consider somewhere more permanent close by.

This place makes really good vietnamese sandwiches. They make it right when you order so you know the food is fresh. It’s cheap too, only $3.50. They also have a variety selection of bubble tea. Try the grilled pork sandwich!
