Cafe Cesura in Bellevue: One for the Breakfast Sandwich Lovers

The Ashton building eatery opens early next month.

Humina humina: the all American breakfast sandwich at Cafe Cesura. It isn’t on the fall menu but fingers crossed we’ll be seeing it soon. Photo courtesy Cafe Cesura facebook.

When talking about the food at Café Cesura, the forthcoming breakfast and lunch joint he’s opening with chef Leon Douglas, Shawn Nickerson is partial to the hanger steak sandwich. Dressed in castelvetrano tapenade and served on baguette, it does sound tasty. But let’s take a moment to discuss the morning menu.

In addition to a variety of muffins, Stumptown coffee, granola, and pork rillette flavored with fresh-squeezed OJ (interesting), the menu is made up of four breakfast sandwiches. For anyone who prefers to start the day with a ‘wich, this is exciting. These aren’t your typical egg-bacon-cheese stacks (but there is one of those). Rather, you’ll find selections like smoked salmon on baguette served with a pickled onion and caper aioli; fig and brie with arugula on ciabatta; and salami and fennel slathered in dijon butter atop Macrina bread.

Graham Baba designed the downtown Bellevue cafe (what isn’t the firm designing these days?), so expect an industrial-mod vibe with 23-foot high ceilings. Nickerson and Douglas plan to open Cesura (their first venture), located at 1015 108th Ave NE, on November 7.

It sounded interesting and great until I read about the 23 foot high ceilings. That makes for an extremely noisy environment, difficult to hear anything or to have a conversation in a normal voice. My experience is one has to yell to be able to hear and be heard. I’ll give it a try, but I like quiet places to eat.

I prefer to view through glass half full… Can’t wait for the doors to open on this culinary jewel! High ceilings will give this small space a mighty flair.

They come off as stuck up and trying too hard to be different/better in order to succeed to me. The menu is more confusing than enticing. The food might just be that good and I hope they do end up making it…but they might need to get their heads out of the clouds some and realize they are just a cafe and not the best thing that hit Washington.

I will definitely visit this new cafe. Reading the menu made my mouth water!!!

Regarding new venues doing their best in order to succeed is a great thing! It’s okay to raise the bar! Great service – awesome food – wonderful experience! These are key and integral! I say keep your heads up in the clouds!! Be innovative and think outside the box! :)

I am not sure anyone has checked lately, but Bellevue is lacking just this type of place. We are known as the “souless Eastside”. There is very little “original” anything around Bellevue proper and the more effort that is made will make this place a little more interesting. I for one can’t wait to get in and try this place. There is more to life than Starbucks and Tully’s! Gilbert’s is one of the best things going for breakfast and they just aren’t all that great. Let’s give these guys a shot and hope for the best. Be supportive and let’s start creating a little culture around here.

I really enjoy this place. Besides serving great coffee (Stumptown) they have pretty good food. I like the space, because it’s big and airy. I have been here several times for coffee and food.

Great for lunch – soup and sandwich for sure! Their market inspired soups are delicious. Please, support small business and give Cafe Cesura a try.
