A Fiendish Conversation with Cheryl Waters

We talk tunes with the KEXP DJ and live-in-studio coordinator.

Email
Polaroid

KEXP DJ Cheryl Waters is one of the tastemakers defining the Seattle sound. She’s been a fixture at the public radio station for the past 18 years, and though she currently hosts the uber-popular “Midday Show,” her other KEXP gig might be more important. As the on-air events coordinator, she’s responsible for bringing in all the bands who perform live on KEXP (you know, those YouTube videos you blow off work to watch). This Friday KEXP’s Hood-to-Hood celebration hits Ballard with live on-air performances in Bergen Place Park by a great lineup of rock, indie, and alt-country acts curated by Waters: Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, The Maldives, My Goodness, Deep Sea Diver, and Ramona Falls.

We chatted with the veteran of the airwaves about what she looks for when bringing in artists to play KEXP and which up-and-coming Seattle bands she thinks could make it big.

What aspects of Hood-to-Hood are you looking forward to?

All the bands this year are local—one from Portland, the rest from Seattle. A number of the bands have new music out right now, so that makes it really interesting and relevant. The Maldives live shows are practically transcendent. You never know how many people will be on stage. There was a joke among my friends when they were starting out back in 2005 or 2006. We’d go to these shows at the Sunset and they could barely all fit on the stage and we’d be like, “It’s just nine really great-looking guys up there playing this great music.”

What do you look for in an act when you set up an on-air performance?

One of the things we like to do is feature up-and-coming bands—bands that resonate with our listeners, bands that we know they’ll get excited about. And they trust us to curate that music for them.

What new local artists excite you?

That’s one of the hardest questions for me to answer. It’s funny, you’ll run into someone—and of course I’m the perfect person to ask this of—but they’ll say, “What are you listening to right now?” And then I become a deer in the headlights. If I worked for a Top 40 radio station I would just say, “Oh, well I played this 100 times this week.” It would be at the top of my mind, but in any given week I’m playing hundreds, and hundreds, and hundreds of artists.

One of the bands I’m really excited about right now—I think they have so much talent—and I don’t know how huge, if they’re gonna be the next big Death Cab for Cutie, I don’t think so, but Absolute Monarchs is incredible.

What was your favorite live performance you’ve seen in the last year?

I just saw Father John Misty. He’s living in L.A. now, but we still consider him a local artist. I think he’s gonna be huge. I think he’s got the full package: His songs are great, his album’s great, but the live show is incredible. He’s really got some presence.

How are the plans for KEXP’s move to Seattle Center going?

We have signed a lease to be at the Seattle Center, so we’re in a multistage process right now where we’re assessing what our needs are. We are also in the early stages of fundraising. Being a nonprofit, of course, we have to do a capital campaign. So we’re at least a couple years away, but we’re really excited.

Capitol Hill Block Party Announces Initial 2012 Lineup

Neko Case, Major Lazer, and Fitz and the Tantrums headline a diverse lineup.

Email
Neko-case

Neko Case co-headlines this year’s Capitol Hill Block Party.

Though Capitol Hill Block Party has grown substantially since its 1997 debut, it seems this is the year it branches out sonically. In addition the usual assortment of choice rock and indie acts (Neko Case, Phantogram, Cloud Nothings, etc.), 2012’s festival lineup offers some legitimately great hip-hop (Doomtree and Aesop Rock) and electro house music via two doses of Diplo (both solo and headlining with Major Lazer). There are also a loads of genre-bending artists who are sure to get crowds dancing, including the digital dream pop of Grimes, the (obviously) funky Dam-Funk, and South African rapper, singer, and relentless style masher Spoek Mathambo. Three-day passes for the summer event are on sale now at capitolhillblockparty.com.

Here’s the list of artists currently slated to hit Cap Hill this July.

Neko Case / Major Lazer / Fitz And The Tantrums / Phantogram / Aesop Rock with Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz / The Lumineers / Grimes / Diplo / Youth Lagoon / Thee Oh Sees / Cloud Nothings / Twin Shadow / Dam-Funk / Spoek Mathambo / Doomtree / Porcelain Raft / White Arrows / Trust / El Ten Eleven / Yuna / Light Asylum / King Tuff / Psychic Paramount / Jaill / Onuinu / Black Breath / Blouse / Absolute Monarchs / Crystal Stilts / Yawn / The Coathangers / Deadkill / Sandrider / Eighteen Individual Eyes / Pollens / Nightmare Fortress / Colonies / Yukon Blonde / John Maus / Blue Sky Black Death / Nacho Picasso / Kris Orlowski / Lemolo / Kithkin / Hot Bodies In Motion / Kung Foo Grip / Tropical Punk / Nu Sensae / Night Beats / Freighms / Tom Eddy / Dude York / Stephanie / Nude / Feet / Blood Red Dancers / Space Needles / Skarp / Pony Time / Murmurs / Mass Games / Slow Dance / Crypts / Crime Wave / Trash Fire / Vox Mod / Mama Utah / Silly Goose / Underground Revival

Capitol Hill Block Party

The Beach Boys Headline Loaded Summer Concert Series at Chateau Ste. Michelle

Lineup includes Steve Martin, Blondie, Devo, Chicago, and more blasts from the past.

Email
The-beach-boys-at-table-2012-guy-webster1-300x215

The Beach Boys ready for the band’s 50th Anniversary Tour.

The signs of summer in Seattle are a little different than elsewhere in the country. Sun, warmth? Nah. It’s not until people start talking about boating, iced coffee, taking off their boots, and outdoor concerts and films that you really know the season is coming. And one of the highlights every summer is the Chateau Ste. Michelle concert series, where you can pull up a lawn chair, enjoy a bottle of the winery’s best, and shamelessly indulge in feel-good music.

The 2012 lineup doesn’t disappoint. The high point is an evening with the Beach Boys as part of the band’s 50th Anniversary Tour, but that’s really just the start. Want a dose of classic rock? John Fogerty, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, and the Steve Miller Band can accommodate. Need some bluegrass? Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers or Alison Krauss have banjo, will travel.

All that and the Blondie–Devo double bill hasn’t even come up yet. We’re getting excited.

Chateau Ste. Michelle’s 2012 summer concert lineup:

June 16 John Fogerty ($45–$70)
July 6 The Dukes of September Rhythm Revue with Donald Fagen, Boz Scaggs, and Michael McDonald ($50–$80)
July 7 Steve Miller Band ($50–$90)
July 13 The Beach Boys ($70–$125)
July 14 Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band ($58–$100)
July 15 Lyle Lovett and His Large Band ($48–$78)
July 20 Earth, Wind, and Fire ($51–$101)
July 22 Chris Isaak / Shawn Colvin ($45–$70)
July 24 Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers / Emmylou Harris ($50–$80)
Aug 4 Alison Krauss and Union Station / Jerry Douglas ($45–$65)
Sept 1 Diana Krall / Denzal Sinclaire ($50–$100)
Sept 7 Blondie / Devo ($50–$95)
Sept 8 & 9 Bonnie Raitt / Mavis Staples ($50–$80)
Sept 14 Crosby, Stills, and Nash ($51–$81)
Sept 15 Chicago ($50–90)
Sept 16 Huey Lewis and the News ($45–$65)

Tickets for the winery’s 2012 summer concert series go on sale this Saturday, April 28, at 10am at ticketmaster.com, at the Chateau Ste. Michelle wine shop, or by calling 800-745-3000.

Trombone Shorty, Rosanne Cash Lead ZooTunes Summer Concert Lineup

Also on the bill: Pink Martini, Melissa Etheridge.

Email
Tromboneshorty

Might have to elbow the camels for a seat at the Trombone Shorty show.

The Woodland Park Zoo just announced its summer concert series lineup, and buried at the bottom are some late-summer winners: a night with New Orleans jazz-funk band Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, and a double-header featuring class acts Rosanne Cash and Madeleine Peyroux. We tend to sing the praises of Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews every time he comes to town; he has the stage appeal of Usher, the horn skills of Louis, and his band covers everything from jazz standards to Afro-beat to AC/DC. It should be a wild show.

The 2012 BECU ZooTunes lineup

June 27 Leo Kottke / Jake Shimabukuro ($24)
July 3 k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang ($38)
July 18 Grace Potter and the Nocturnals ($22)
July 19 Ziggy Marley ($28)
Aug 1 Los Lobos / Steve Earle and the Dukes ($28)
Aug 5 The Johnny Clegg Band / Ladysmith Black Mambazo ($28)
Aug 12 An Evening With Melissa Etheridge ($39.50)
Aug 15 & 16 An Evening With Pink Martini ($34)
Aug 22 Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue / Robert Randolph and the Family Band ($26) (MET PICK)
Aug 29 Rosanne Cash / Madeleine Peyroux ($26) (MET PICK)

Concerts on the lawn sell out quickly, so put April 27 on your calendar— tickets go on sale at 8am at zoo.org/zootunes.

Poll: What Concerts Do You Want to See at Waterfront Park this Summer?

The City of Seattle is looking for ideas.

Email
Waterfrontpark

This is Waterfront Park. Now imagine the Head and the Heart playing on a floating barge…

As part of the grand plan to revitalize Seattle’s central waterfront, the city is considering a summer concert or event series at Waterfront Park in 2012. That lonely pier between Miner’s Landing and Seattle Aquarium hosts a handful of free Out to Lunch concerts each year—a crowd of about 40 (happily) stood in the rain to watch Star Anna and the Laughing Dogs in July —but the new proposal is bigger, better. It involves a barge.

Waterfront Seattle tweeted a request yesterday for ideas —they’re looking at you, Seattle bands/dancers/theaters/artists. One suggestion, for a concert series, would stage shows on a floating barge parked just off the pier. The audience would hang out on said pier, possibly with a beer in hand (alcohol is permitted in certain parts of the park). So… Concerts at the Mural on Fridays, and Concerts at the Barge on Thursdays? I could get into that.

What shows would you want to see at Waterfront Park this summer?

10 Outdoor Movies, Concerts, and Parties This Weekend

From Remix to Inception at the Mural, it’s a good time to get outside.

Email

SAM Remix returns to Olympic Sculpture Park on Aug 12.

From the Seattle Summer Events Guide:

THURSDAY
While you’re on the Blitz Capitol Hill Arts Walk, keep an eye out for the ongoing street art project at the site of Capitol Hill’s new Sound Transit station. It’s the aptly named Capitol Hill Wall Project.

FRIDAY
Hazy pop band Seapony joins Gold Leaves and Math and Physics Club for another (free!) Concert at the Mural, starting at 6 at Seattle Center’s Mural Amphitheatre.

More free fun: Start early at SLUBP (our fun new acronym for the South Lake Union Block Party). The neighborhood bash runs from noon till 11pm and features wine tastings, a beer garden, and noshes from local eateries (fingers crossed that includes pretzels from Brave Horse Tavern). Michael Cera flick Scott Pilgrim vs. the World screens at dusk.

Just down the street at Olympic Sculpture Park, SAM’s late-night art party Remix kicks off at 8 with music by local DJs, dancing, cocktails, and artist talks. First 50 people wearing gingham get in free.

SATURDAY
Swoon to singer-songwriter Amos Lee at Chateau Ste. Michelle; California alt-country band Calexico joins.

Or you could enter a dream within a dream within a dream when Inception screens at dusk at Mural Amphitheatre.

Get your Jeff Bridges fix at Fremont Outdoor Movies’s Tron-a-thon. The Tron double header starts with the 1982 original, where the Dude plays a brilliant young software engineer, and closes with Tron Legacy (2010), where he plays…a brilliant old software engineer. Doors open at 7; film starts at 9.

SUNDAY
Tis a cultural event when the Boston Red Sox visit Safeco play the Mariners. We learn how to swear in a different language. Those dirty water lovers are in town Friday through Sunday.

Nibble your way down 12th Avenue on Capitol Hill during the 12th Avenue Neighborhood Festival. Bars and restaurants along the block—including Skillet, the Local Vine, Barrio, La Spiga, and High 5 Pie—offer up cheap bites and drink deals.

All the Go-Go’s—Belinda Carlisle, Charlotte Caffey, Gina Schock, Jane Wielden, and Kathy Valentine—are back together for a 30th anniversary Go-Go Ladies Gone Wild Tour and they’re stopping by Woodland Park for a BECU ZooTunes show. Lock up your children.

Concerts at the Mural return August 5.

From the Seattle Summer Events Guide:

Concerts at the Mural, the annual Friday-night summer series at Seattle Center’s Mural Amphitheatre, opens August 5 with a fury: alt-country band the Maldives and chamber pop crew Hey Marseilles and the tambourine-lovin’ Black Whales split the bill. We’d pay to see just one of those local acts onstage—and luckily, we don’t have to drop a dime for any of these concerts. Admission is free, but you’ll have to pay a little at the beer/wine garden and for Skillet Street Food. Doors open at 5 and shows start at 6, except for this Saturday’s BBQ, which kicks off at 2.

Here’s the full lineup:

Aug 5 Featuring the Maldives, Hey Marseilles, and Black Whales.
Aug 6 KEXP BBQ featuring Fool’s Gold, Capsula, Virgin Islands, and Mad Rad.
Aug 12 Featuring Seapony, Gold Leaves, and Math and Physics Club.
Aug 19 Featuring Black Mountain, My Goodness, and Whalebones.
Aug 26 Pickwick, Drew Grow & the Pastors’ Wives, and Ravenna Woods.

CONTEST Seattle Center is also sponsoring a Concerts at the Mural contest to win seats in the designated VIP area for you and five friends, six food tickets, and six drink tickets for the beer garden. Enter to win at thenextfifty.org.

Concerts at the Mural are on Fridays, Aug 5-26, and Saturday, Aug 6, at Seattle Center’s Mural Amphitheatre. Admission is free. If it looks like rain, call Seattle Center Customer Service at 684-7200 or go to seattlecenter.com after 2pm for updates.

Today’s Summer Guide Pick: Star Anna Plays a Free Show at Waterfront Park

Email
Staranna_1

Don’t mess with a Star.

From the Seattle Summer Events Guide:

I don’t care if it’s raining, hailing, or chunks of the viaduct are falling from the sky this afternoon—get over to Waterfront Park at noon to hear Ellensburg alt-country band Star Anna and the Laughing Dogs play a free Out to Lunch set. Music writers are always touting the “next big thing” with the hopes that they’ll actually get one right—and with the release of their new album Alone in this Together yesterday, SA&TLD is breaking out in a big way—but I doubt Star Anna would give a damn what anyone has to say about her. She’d just level that steely gaze and unleash another round of aching vocals. Point made.

I’ve been listening to Star Anna and the Laughing Dogs for about a year now—seeking rock solace from all the indie pop—but this is no new act. Star Anna (her given name) was discovered busking outside an Ellensburg cafe at age 16, and the 25-year-old counts Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready and Guns N’ Roses’s Duff McKagan as fans and collaborators. With her band the Laughing Dogs, she’s been a regular at Tractor Tavern for the last few years, but this week feels like a coming-out party anyway. They have a new PR machine, a new label (Local 638 Records, the imprint of another Seattle rocker you’d feel cooler just knowing, Visqueen’s Rachel Flotard), and an exhaustive live schedule. There was last night’s record release party at Easy Street Records, today’s Out to Lunch show, and upcoming appearances at Teatro ZinZanni, University Village, and Kirkland’s Summer Concert Series before the big ticket: playing the Pearl Jam 20th anniversary show in Wisconsin.

Before they get too big to play free shows, see them at:

Waterfront Park, Seattle, noon, July 13
Teatro ZinZanni, 11pm, guest appearance, July 16
University Village Concert Series, 7:30pm, July 20
Kirkland Summer Concert Series, 7pm, July 21
