Fremont Gets Even Funkier on Earth Day

Nectar Lounge hosts a two-day festival with 20-plus bands and plenty of organic beverages.

Fremont hosting an Earth Day festival isn’t news. What’s news is that the Center of the Universe—with its solstice parade, naked bicyclists, Lenin statue, and corner pot shop—doesn’t already have an Earth Day festival. Thanks to the organizational efforts of Nectar Lounge, the neighborhood will throw a party for Mother Earth all day Saturday and Sunday, with family activities and kegs of organic root beer in the early afternoon, followed by jazz, funk, DJ sets, dance parties, and organic beer beer that flows until 2am.

Our top picks Kindie rock favorites the Not-Its! will play Nectar from noon–1 on Sunday, and the unbelievably funky Brooklyn band Snarky Puppy takes the stage from 10:30–11:45 on Saturday night. Funny enough, both names sound like kindie rock acts.

Adults and kids who arrive at the festival via bicycle will receive $2 off admission (normally $5–$35)—just check your helmets at the door. Recycled Cycles will accept bike donations on site, which they’ll then refurbish and donate to Bicycles for Humanity. Turn in a bicycle, and you get in for free.

For more information, visit the Fremont Earth Day Festival Facebook page. And if you’re looking for a planet-friendly meal this weekend, check out Nosh Pit’s list of Earth Day Eats.

Local Talent

A Fiendish Conversation with Mark Siano

In our new Q&A series, we chat with local artists and performers about their craft. Up next: the Soft Rock Kid.

Comedian Mark Siano is, roughly, a quintuple threat. By day, the thirtysomething is a receptionist at a medical clinic. By night, he’s the Soft Rock Kid, mocking the hits of the ‘80s and ’90s with a troupe of backup Freedom Dancers. Or he’s crafting a Clandestine Cabaret show, or a Triple Door musical act (coming this March) called “Modern Luv,” about the perils of relationships in the texting-and-Facebook era.

Siano has developed a cult following with his music-comedy antics, but for his latest project, he’s staying offstage and playing producer to White Hot, the new psychodrama by playwright Tommy Smith. It’s a far cry from the silly fun Smith and Siano have as members of sketch troupe the Habit. Instead, tragedy unfolds onstage as a young couple’s marriage crumbles, thanks to Shakespearean-sized helpings of madness and betrayal. Siano found the show so compelling, he knew he had to be a part of it.

As we continue our new series of Fiendish Conversations, Siano tells us about the show, his busy days, and what’s up next.

What’s your preshow routine?
I work a 9-5 job, and as soon as I’m off the clock (and sometimes sooner, thanks to my uber-accommodating employers), I hit the emails, and get the word out about the show. Producing involves a lot of hanging up flyers, handing out checks, making spreadsheets, bugging people. My daily activities—mainly being a receptionist for an OB/GYN clinic where I talk to women about their problems on the phone all day—has made me a much better listener and problem solver.

How did you approach this show?
While I have produced dozens of shows over the last five years, this is the first time I have no artistic stake. I’m usually helping direct or performing on stage, but now I’m aiding someone else’s vision. [Director] Braden Abraham is a pro so I’m happy that I get to work with him. Also, this show is a drama, so instead of constantly making jokes that could be added to the script or scene, we’re making jokes to relieve ourselves from the really heavy material. The jokes are therapeutic—like a release valve.

What’s the highlight of this performance?
Great acting and a great script. I am particularly enamored with Hannah Franklin [a member of Washington Ensemble Theatre] who has the majority of the lines. She has been one of my favorite actresses to watch in Seattle the past couple of years.

What is the best performance in your field (local or touring) you’ve seen in the last year?
Tommy Smith’s Sextet at Washington [Ensemble Theatre] inspired me to do this show. I also loved Jose Bold’s December.

What local artist, performer, or producer in your field should we watch for?
Cafe Nordo is the new up-and-coming company—they’re rapidly going from small to medium to large. It’s art, food, and performance. Really groundbreaking work. Always entertaining. Always silly.

If you weren’t a performer, director, comedian, producer, etc., what else would you want to try?
I don’t know their actual title, but I’d be an Olympic event coordinator. I f*cking love the Olympics. When the US beat Russia in hockey in the 1980 Olympics, I was four years old and my dad immediately took me to the ice rink and laced up my skates. I grew up with fervent sports enthusiasm—my old world was sports.

What do you think of critics?
This sounds like a kiss-up answer, but I love critics. People get upset with a bad review, but that’s something you need to improve your game. They’re simply spreading the word—if there are people out there attending theatre, I’m happy.

White Hot
West of Lenin, Jan 20–Feb 11, $9–$18
UPDATED 1/19/12. The opening of this show has been pushed back to Friday, Jan 27.

Twihards stood in a line that snaked around the building, up Phinney Avenue N and down N 36th Street prior to the screening. Some parents had been waiting since 6:30am.

Nikki and Elizabeth, Seattle lurves you.

Pale was in vogue on Saturday night as Twilight vampires Nikki Reed and Elizabeth Reaser, aka Rosalie and Esme Cullen, hit the red carpet for an outdoor screening of second film New Moon in Fremont, and to promote the third and latest installment, Eclipse, out in theaters Wednesday. Twimania has officially begun…again.

Allied Integrated Marketing brought the lovely lady vamps as part of the Fremont Outdoor Movie series, where a new scene from Eclipse was previewed for the lucky hundred or so who packed the parking lot with folding chairs and blankets. Fortunately for you, we’re Twihards and couldn’t resist asking the stars a couple quick questions. Namely, what’s in store for the Cullen clan in Act 3?

“There’s a little more depth and back story for all of us,” Reed said.

And any men dragged to see Eclipse should know that there’s the promise of vampire war and plenty of action. Reaser, who plays hero Edward’s (Robert Pattinson’s) loving vampire mom, even throws a few punches (she’s known to giggle prior to a fight scene).

“There is a lot of action, mostly with us kicking ass,” Reaser boasted. “It was really scary to be hitting and running around and acting all aggro. I just didn’t want to do it, so I would have laugh attacks. But it quickly turned to anger and violence, so it worked for me.”

And, dare we ask: Could Snooki have a part in the final installment, Breaking Dawn, after she and her Jersey Shore friends staged a fairly hilarious spoof of the girl-meets-ghoul tale on Jimmy Kimmel?

“We would welcome Snooki anywhere,” Reed said, wasting no time responding. “She could be a wolf.”

Check out our exclusive red carpet interview (below) and a slideshow from the evening (above). Photos by Douglas Bair; video by Mary Pritchard.

*No journalists were harmed in the making of this video. Only suffered minor bruises from being thrown against a metal barricade by preteen girls.

Elizabeth Reaser (who guested on Grey’s Anatomy ) plays vampire mom Esme in Twilight.

Twihards and teenage boys, get excited: Two stars of the Twilight film franchise, Nikki Reed and Elizabeth Reaser, who play members of good-guy vampire clan the Cullens, will be in Fremont on Friday Saturday to introduce a free outdoor screening of the second film, New Moon—and a clip from the upcoming third installment, Eclipse, out nationwide on June 30. It’s just the beginning of a new wave of Twi-mania (I’m trying to see how many words I can stick Twi- in front of), which means more rap battles between Team Edward and Team Jacob…I hope. The fourth and final film, Breaking Dawn, is slated for release on November 18, 2011.

Reed and Reaser have been enjoying a little extra time in the spotlight lately, especially since Vanity Fair ran a fairly stunning photo spread of several Twilight ladies clad in blood-red gowns in their July issue. Reed also enjoys more time onscreen in the third installment, as the back story of her character—bitchy “sister” Rosalie to Robert Pattinson’s brooding hero Edward—unfolds. Both Reaser (doting mom Esme) and Reed had fleeting roles in New Moon.

Expect a big turnout for the free outdoor screening, which is part of the Fremont Outdoor Movie series at 3501 Phinney Ave North. Doors open at 6; event starts at 8. Don’t forget a lawn chair.
