The Neptune Theatre Sinks. STG Salvages It.
The granddaddy of Seattle’s neighborhood moviehouses will go dark in February, but not for long.

It’s been a boomerang day for the 89-year-old Neptune Theatre, the U-District’s original, somewhat faded movie palace. First Landmark Theatres—which acquired it along with the rest of Randy Finley’s Seven Gables mini-chain—announced it would close the Neptune. Now Seattle Theatre Group, nonprofit rescuer/operator of the even larger and grander Paramount and Moore Theatres, says it will reopen the Neptune in the spring, after renovation and restoration, and present both live shows and films. And yes, the Neptune will continue to help host the Seattle International Film Festival.
I have a feeling STG won’t continue the Neptune’s tradition of cheeky marquee messages (sometimes dissing its own shows—"Static Malick" for Terrence Malick’s The New World). Still this seems like a great second life; every moviehouse should be so lucky. More anon on why the Neptune’s first life ran its course.
