Spotlight on PNB in Dancing Across Borders
Cambodian dancer and former PNBer Sy Sar joins filmmaker Anne Bass at the Varsity Theatre opening tonight.
Even if you saw the world premiere of Dancing Across Borders at the 2009 Seattle International Film Festival, take the opportunity to watch it again at Varsity Theatre tonight at 7:10, with filmmaker Anne Bass and star Sokvannara “Sy” Sar in attendance. The stunning 88-minute documentary follows Cambodian dancer Sy from age 16 in 2000, when Bass discovered him performing at Angkor Wat’s temples, to his trip to New York to study with the School of American Ballet and ultimately perform for Pacific Northwest Ballet under Peter Boal (who features prominently in the trailer above). Though Sy’s no longer with the company, he’s making a name for himself through this film, which opens in select cities nationwide this weekend.
Dancing Across Borders screens at Varsity Theatre April 9-15, with Bass and Sar making appearances tonight after the 7:10 show, and tomorrow before the 9:30 show. For tickets, click here.
