The coming weeks will bring restaurant openings aplenty, but also in the pipeline are several cafes coffee- and tea-oriented folk will surely appreciate. Here are three that have us excited.
Wine Tea Chocolate
The erudite Christopher Gronbeck creates a space dedicated to…Well, you probably can figure that out. The Fremont cafe follows the farm-to-table philosophy guiding so many local restaurants—that is, carefully selected, artisan producers are the focus. A grand opening is scheduled for September 20, with tastings and demos galore, but starting today is a happy hour featuring various $2-themed discounts: two bucks off beer and wine, $2 pots of tea or olive plates. Evenings bring a wine bar vibe, with table service and a light menu of Mediterranean-inspired fare. (And yes, there is coffee as well.)
The inspiration comes from northern Italy, onetime home of owner Andrea Florissi. Pastries, most of them prepped in-house, might mean bonet, a flan with amaretti and caramel, or polenta cookies, while coffee beverages (made with Lavazza beans) include bicerin, a blend of dense chocolate, espresso, and foamed cream. The cafe, located at 422 Yale Avenue, will stay open weeknights for wine-and-snacking.
Michael Uetz and Myriam Guillemin replicate their Eastlake Ave staple in the downtown core. The space at Sixth and University is longer and narrower but will maintain the retro aesthetic. And the custom coffee blends. Voxx is one of the (surprisingly) few cafes to carry Lighthouse Roasters, that most excellent small-batch purveyor based in Fremont. The duo is looking at a late September opening.
