Saturday is shaping up to be an epic drinking day. Not only does Cinco de Mayo fall on a weekend this year, but the Kentucky Derby happens Friday and Saturday. This means local bars must choose between tacos and tequila or mint juleps and equine pursuits (or celebrate both and plan on a wicked May 6 hangover). Seattle has no shortage of Cinco de Mayo destinations, but here are a few spots doing it up for the derby.
Saddle up in your seersucker and get over to revelry epicenter The BottleNeck Lounge to see Rousing Sermon, Daddy Nose Best, and I’ll Have Another run for the roses. Enjoy a dollar off top-shelf bourbons till close, mint juleps fashioned with Kentucky-made Buffalo Trace, and a best hat prize. Tacos will be available all day for dedicated Cinco de Mayo celebrators.
For Seattleites living north of the ship canal looking to get in the spirit of derby day, The Sexton is having a party. When it comes to “the most exciting two minutes in sports,” it’s only prudent to wet your whistle with mint juleps; The Sexton is running julep specials—apricot, peach, and classic—sponsored by Four Roses Bourbon. In other Sexton news, bar manager Marley Tomic-Beard has launched a new spring cocktail menu.
As mentioned on Friday, the Ballard Ave newcomer is hedging its bets with a dual Cinco-Derby celebration. Mint juleps will be lowing and the barstaurant is opening early, at noon, to show the Kentucky Derby on its massive 120-inch projector screen.
Are any other local establishments planning derbycentric events?
