Brewery openings are happening in flurries this month. Last week it was two Ballard nanos that begin with the letter "P"; next week the Central District gains a new community watering hole and after that a long-planned gastropub project opens in SoDo. Here are four beer newcomers definitely worth checking out.
Open: March 27
Epic Ales brewer Cody Morris and chef Travis Kukull joined forces a while back with plans to turn Morris's tiny (and I mean tiny) SoDo tasting room into a slightly-less-tiny brewpub. The two have been putting on occasional food and beer events and building out a cabin-like little room that Morris says “looks like an adorable Twin Peaks.” After a soft open next week and a pig roast on March 24 (check Facebook for price and details) the Gastropod will open for reals on March 27 (4–10 Tuesday through Friday and 2–10 on Saturdays). Eight of the 12 taps will pour Morris's ubercreative beers. On Tuesdays the guys are partnering with Hama Hama for dollar oyster nights; Kukull is playing with various preparations, including a smoke gun that looks like a bong, but delivers a light smoke flavor to a freshly shucked oyster. Look for $5 beer-and-a-plate combo specials, too.
Open: March 20
Owner Justin Gerardy put a ton of sweat equity into his space at 2504 S Jackson and now it's officially a tiny brewery about to start pouring CDA ("a black IPA if you must"), rye IPA, wheated red ale, and other creations. Grab one of the taproom's eight seats, or fill your growler on Wednesday from 4 to 10. Keep an eye on the website and Facebook for permanent hours, and keep an eye on the weather because when it finally warms up, Standard has the makings of a lovely outdoor seating area.
Open: March 8
Two lovers of bikes, beer, and each other have taken over the former Maritime Pacific Brewing site. Owners Dave Keller and Haley Woods get creative with brews like tangerine wheat and coffee saison, as well as plenty of classics. I'm also glad to know they aren't above doing up some green beer for St. Patrick's Day. Open Fridays 5–10 and Saturdays 4–10.
Open: March 8
A nanobrewery from homebrewing neighbors turned professional partners is open for business and pouring beers like a Cinderblock CDA, Burke-Gilman Bitter, and (duh) a house IPA. Hours are Thursday and Friday 4:30–9, and Saturday from 2–9. The friendly little hang (with cornhole!), located at 826 NW 49th St, also has food trucks like Contigo and Happy Grillmore on heavy rotation.
