Billy Corgan brings his newly assembled Smashing Pumpkins to Showbox SoDo September 10.

Music-wise, 2010 seems to be the year of the ’90s. Indie rockers Pavement played a slew of summer festivals (including our own Sasquatch! Music Festival in May), while Soundgarden rocked Lollapalooza over the weekend. Now comes news that the Smashing Pumpkins will play the Showbox SoDo next month.

Reunited since 2007, the band played a few shows in July (with Billy Corgan inexplicably passing out during one concert in Tampa) in support of an ambitious 44-song work called Teargarden By Kaleidyscope.

Well, “reunited” isn’t quite the right word for it. Only one original member remains: singer/guitarist Billy Corgan, the band’s most outspoken and controversial member. And lately he’s been more famous for fronting the short-lived alternative super group Zwan (featuring members of A Perfect Circle, Tortoise, Slint, and Chavez), writing mediocre poetry, dating Courtney Love, and even Jessica Simpson. For the tour, his bandmates include former Veruca Salt bassist Nicole Fiorentino, guitarist Jeff Schroeder, and drummer Mike Byrne, who is 20 years old. So let’s see, that means he would have been one year old when the band’s breakthrough album Siamese Dream was released. He must have some killer chops to play with the notoriously meticulous Corgan.

While seeing other original members James Iha, D’arcy Wretzky and Jimmy Chamberlain join Corgan onstage would be a trip, their historically rocky relationships make this lineup the closest we’ll ever get to seeing The Smashing Pumpkins whole again.

Tickets for The Smashing Pumpkins’ September 10 show at the Showbox SoDo go on sale Saturday, August 14 at 10 a.m.
