Hail King Felix! Mariners’ Hernandez Wins AL Cy Young

And then there was a rainbow over Safeco. (We’re not kidding.)

Despite a 13-12 record, the M’s Felix Hernandez wins the 2010 AL Cy Young.

TheRealMariners just tweeted that the M’s own Felix Hernandez—aka the brightest star to escape a black hole season—has won the 2010 AL Cy Young award, a nod to his overall numbers rather than his 13-12 record.

"That’s clearly not a normal Cy Young record. But Seattle’s lineup was awful this season and Hernandez got little run support…[But] by the numbers, Hernandez was a clear leader. He led the AL in ERA (2.27), innings pitched (249 2/3) and quality starts (30)," said ESPN’s Richard Durrett on why he cast his vote for King Felix. The 24-year-old right-hander took 21 of 28 first place votes, beating the Yankees’ CC Sabathia and Tampa Bay’s David Price. TheRealMariners reported a rainbow shone over Safeco Field around the time of the announcement.

Meanwhile, Roy Halladay proved that his preseason move from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Philadelphia Phillies—coincidentally, the same move that brought Cliff Lee to Seattle for his brief tenure—was pretty damn smart. In 2010 he pitched a perfect game, a postseason no-hitter, and picked up the NL Cy Young award with unanimous consent.
