Feels a bit like Christmas this morning. Not only is NPR streaming Love This Giant, the highly anticipated new album from Talking Head's David Byrne and St. Vincent's Annie Clark, in its entirety right now, but the duo also debuted the video for its first single, "Who," this morning. (Watch it below.) It's a playful way to kick off their collaboration: Byrne finds Clark passed out in the middle of a country road and issues her a dance-happy sobriety test.
And though I'm only about 20 minutes into my first listen of Love This Giant, I'm liking the mashup of styles: Byrne's iconic vocals (he sounds better than ever) with Clark's dreamy pop, all punctuated by heavy brass: trumpets, sax, trombones. Afrobeat gods Antibalas and Sharon Jones’s regular soul band the Dap-Kings make guest appearances on the album, and the duo is said to be touring with a brass band this fall (including its October 17 concert at 5th Avenue Theatre, as part of CityArts Fest). If new wave and funk had a lovechild, it could only hope to sound this cool.
Love This Giant is on sale September 11.
