WINNERS OF THIS YEAR’S International Conservation Photography Awards hang like thrilling stills from Planet Earth at the Burke Museum: an intimate portrait of a lion with his cub, an underwater closeup of a wide-eyed sea lion, even a Rhino in the Mist. In Kah Kit Yoong’s Into the Light (pictured), an oryx seems to strike a pose in Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia. “My intention had been to photograph the dune peaks receiving the last light of the day, to intensify the color of the red sand,” Yoong says. “At the crucial moment, [a lone] oryx…crested the dune, pausing for a moment as if to survey the magnificent landscape.”
