BENEATH COLD SEAS (University of Washington Press) by photographer David Hall is a visual feast of Pacific Northwest sea life served with a science lesson on the side. Hall captures personality and emotion where you least expect it: A curmudgeonly squid does Clint Eastwood on one page; migrating salmon race anxiously past the camera on another. But the real showstoppers are the jellies: A jellyfish swarm becomes a starry night of paratroopers, reminiscent of scenes in Band of Brothers, while a moon jelly takes on the role of, well, the moon.
