The Polaroids: Mapplethorpe exhibit, at Henry Art Gallery October 24–January 31, features intimate black-and-white shots spanning the years 1970 through 1975 and captures spontaneous portraits of friends as well as fleeting moments with lovers and strangers in New York’s Chelsea Hotel before Mapplethorpe’s rise to fame.
