Fall Arts 2012

Poll: The Best of Seattle Arts, According to Seattle Artists

We asked 35 Seattle directors, musicians, dancers, and all-around culture gurus to give us their top picks for the year. All of the answers are anonymous, all praise unfettered.

Published Aug 19, 2012, 10:59am

15 Artists to Watch in 2013

JENNIFER LEE TAYLOR
ACTRESS

“She’s a character actress trapped in the body of an ingenue and it makes for some greatly nuanced performances like she did in Pygmalion” at Seattle Shakespeare.

JERICK HOFFER
ACTOR

“From Moritz in Spring Awakening to Angel in Rent to Hedwig in 2013’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Jerick is a rising star on the Seattle musical theater scene.… He’s not just ‘one to watch.’ He’s the one to watch.”

NICK GARRISON

ACTOR

“He is a product of our wonderful arts training and he has chosen to stay local (thank you, Nick). He can do absolutely anything you put in front of him.”

BRADEN ABRAHAM
DIRECTOR

“Phenomenal director [who’s] done amazing work to date.” We loved his Clybourne Park at Seattle Rep; he’ll helm the Rep’s The Glass Menagerie this fall.

 MICHAEL PLACE

ACTOR AND COFOUNDER OF WASHINGTON ENSEMBLE THEATRE

“The guy was a force in the Intiman Festival.… If he stays in Seattle, he’s definitely one to watch, both for his talents as an actor and for his work as a producer.”

EMILY CONBERE

PLAYWRIGHT AND MEMBER OF SEATTLE REP NEW WRITERS GROUP

“A fantastic writer with a great sense of theatricality and whimsy, reminiscent of Sarah Ruhl.”

CARLA KÖRBES
PACIFIC NORTHWEST BALLET PRINCIPAL DANCER

“She is an extraordinary ballerina who is currently dancing in the prime years of her career.”

ANDREW BARTEE
PACIFIC NORTHWEST BALLET CORPS DANCER

“Young fantastic dancer and exciting up-and-coming choreographer… He stages his first ballet with PNB in November.”

ALLIE HANKINS
CHOREOGRAPHER

“Inventive movement vocabulary and a keen mind for creating stage visuals,” like with Like a Sun That Pours Forth Light But Never Warmth at Velocity in May.

SAINT GENET
PERFORMANCE ART TROUPE

“Balls-to-the-wall performances [at the now defunct Lawrimore Project] that invoke haunting yet beautiful imagery.”

THE SATORI GROUP
THEATER ENSEMBLE

“Fabulous Prizes by Neil Ferron is still scorched into my brain.”

CANDACE FRANK
COSTUME DESIGN

“Very talented young designer doing good work without much in the way of resources.” Check her out at Lucia Neare’s Theatrical Wonders.

JASON PARKER
JAZZ TRUMPETER

“Consistently excellent music and hard working. He deserves more recognition.”

PICKWICK
NEOSOUL BAND

“They’re just great!”

KYLE LOVEN
PUPPET MASTER

“Kyle is making puppetry in a way that I’ve never seen before and begins to question the lines between visual art, image-based theater, and puppetry.”
