She seems to stare directly into your soul—or perhaps she’s undressing you with her eyes? On second thought, she looks reflective, like she’s contemplating what the tomorrow after tomorrow holds. The range of emotion in Akio Takamori’s Squatting Girl in Striped Dress, a new work on display at James Harris Gallery, is common across his 30-plus years of figurative ceramics. They’ve been shown in stately and sexually charged exhibits alike, from Enduring Clay to Give Me Head (a collection of busts). Yet they always bear a painterly touch, recalling his childhood in Japan, and the innovations of a master at work.
