Tis’ the season for nutty, spicy, dark, and fruity seasonal ales, porters, and stouts. And thankfully a lot of those include our favorite gourd: the pumpkin. Sorry, butternut squash, it’s a close second, but we usually don’t see you showing up in alcoholic beverages—and that’s a deal breaker around these parts. To start the season off right, head to one of these establishments pouring up those pumpkin brews on happy hour.
Duck Island Ale House
Find a cozy spot near the indoor fireplace and enjoy happy hour from 2pm to 5pm daily, where all appetizers are half off. Which means boneless chicken wings, chili tots, burger sliders, brats, and a quesadilla are all under $3 each. That bar food will also pair nicely with $1 off all drafts, seasonal pumpkin ales on tap right now are Beer Valley’s Jackalope Pumpkin porter, Elysian’s Night Owl Pumpkin, and Ace Pumpkin cider. And maybe play some skee ball while you're at it.
All three Elysian locations offer happy hour specials. The Capitol Hill brewpub’s is from 4:30 to 6:30pm Sunday through Thursday. The Tangletown location HH is Monday through Friday from 4:30 to 6:30, and the Pioneer Square spot does 4 to 6pm and 9 to 11pm Monday through Friday, with the exception of game days. At all locations it’s a $1 off Elysian brews, including the Great Pumpkin ale. Each brewery has its own food menu of classic pub grub ranging from $2 to $6.
The Pike Pub and Brewery
It’s “hoppy hour” here Monday through Friday from 4 to 6pm, which means Pike pints are $1 off and pitchers are $4 off. And you know it’s fall when the Pike Harlot’s Harvest pumpkin ale is on draft. Food items are $3 to $5, including spicy wings, organic radishes with truffle salt, and soft pretzels served with stout mustard. Or try the pizza and a pint special for ten bucks.
The Yard House
This huge sports bar with 130 taps holds happy hour Monday through Friday from 3 to 6pm and a late night round Sunday through Wednesday 10pm to close. It’s all about the glassware here, in shortys, pints, import pints, goblets, and half yards. If you’re not familiar the half yard, it's a tall and skinny almost beaker-shaped yard of beer that's 32oz. Pricing starts at $2.25 for the shorty and goes up to $10 for the yards depending on beverage choice. Rouge Pumpkin Patch, Dogfish Head Pumpkin Ale, and Samuel Adams Fat Jack are just a few seasonal ales available. Select appetizers like—ahem, the onion ring tower—are half off, as well as a few pizza combos.
