Bay Area skincare clinic SkinSpirit recently took ownership of the now closed Calidora Skin Clinics, setting up in the former U District and Redmond locations, and creating a new space entirely in Bellevue Square. But what may seem like a Cali takeover has a local ties—the chain's owner Lynn Heublein hails from the 206.

They've given the two existing clinics a face lift, brought in some top-of-the-line California technologies, and, perhaps most importantly, kept on many of Calidora's practitioners and estheticians.

I stopped by the U District clinic to test out dermaplaning, one of SkinSpirit's several new offerings. The hour-long facial involves a butter knife–like instrument used to painlessly exfoliate your skin, followed by a series of masks, peels, extractions, and serums. The treatment itself was great, my preferred balance of serene spa atmosphere with medical-grade scrupulousness from a highly professional and thoughtful esthetician.

But, while my skin was radiant for the evening following the treatment, things have gone downhill from there. In the week since, my once "normal" skin is now oily in patches, flaky in others, with bumps and unevenness I haven't seen since my teen years. I'm not knocking the spa, but (my mistake) certainly be sure to ask about possible reactions before getting on the facial table.

Other additions to the SkinSpirit menu include body contouring and Ultherapy. Each spa has its own set of services, though Bellevue will focus mainly on injectibles. Check the website for current discounts and specials.
