This week: a salmon-chanted evening, dinner with April Bloomfield, Serafina’s garden party, and Kevin Bacon.

June 25, 2012

THURSDAY June 28
Forks Over Knives
Though it’ll surely take much more than a movie to make the American masses lay off the meat, Lee Fulkerson’s thorough analysis of the dangers of animal-based and processed foods has been converting carnivores and developing a cult following since its release in 2011. Marlene’s Market and Deli in Federal Way will host a free screening at 7pm with nutritionists and naturopaths available to answer any post-film questions.

SATURDAY June 30
Salmon-Chanted Evening
Eat Salmon. Save parks. Tom Douglas is once again hosting four Saturday evening salmon dinners this summer, with all the proceeds going to the Seattle Parks Department. The first dinner happens Saturday at 5pm, and Douglas will be grilling the salmon served up on $15 plates.

Feed Your Best Friend Better
Brace yourself; bad joke coming. After your dog tastes one of author and Dog Food Dude Rick Woodford’s healthful canine cuisines he won’t even think about eating your homework anymore. Remember, I warned you. The canine cooking class at Sizzleworks in Bellevue starts at 10am and costs $25. Well-behaved dogs welcome.

SUNDAY July 1
Garden Party Extravaganza
Serafina and Cicchetti have decided to make last year’s garden party, conjured up in honor of Serafina’s 20th anniversary, an annual thing. Patio grilling, cocktails, wine, a rosé bar and gelato will take center stage while ongoing live music creates a bit of graceful ambience. Entrance is free but $5 food and drink tickets must be redeemed for, well, food and drink.

Canada Day
To celebrate our border-sharing neighbors to the north, Linda Derschang’s gastropub Smith will be pouring Caesers (aka Bloody Caesars)—essentially Bloody Marys with clam juice, invented in Alberta. Also on the Canada-celebrating menu is poutine—the nation’s signature combo of fries covered in gravy and cheese curds.

MONDAY July 2
Bars On Fire
Vito’s will be hosting the latest Seattle installment of “Bars on Fire”—an ode to cachaça, Brazil’s most popular alcoholic beverage, courtesy of the well-regarded Novo Fogo brand that’s distilled in Brazil but based in Bellevue. Bartenders Erik Hakkinen of Zig Zag Cafe and Kristen Naranjo of The Hideout will be transplanted behind the bar for the evening of celebrating the sugarcane-based spirit—7 to 10pm.

All Roads Lead To Bacon
Monday movies at King’s Hardware will commence a five-week, artery-cloggin’ journey to Bacon—Kevin Bacon. John Turturro will be the first link in the cinematic chain as King’s back patio will show The Big Lebowski and O Brother, Where Art Thou? Movies begin at sundown.

BEYOND
July 8 At a Wendy’s in Ballard I once witnessed a disgruntled elderly woman demand a refund for her chicken sandwich because it looked “nothing like the picture.” Renowned New York Times food photographer Andrew Scrivani will host a hands-on workshop at Dinette that will reveal the secrets as to how composition, lighting and propping can make any food look downright artful. The $250 session includes a photo-ready lunch.

July 20 The prolific chef and restaurateur, April Bloomfield, will be feasting with fans and promoting her inaugural cookbook, A Girl and Her Pig at The Corson Building. Two separate seatings begin at 6:30 and 8. The $100 dinner includes a signed copy of the book.

Sept. 9 This fall Cedarbrook Lodge will once again celebrate the abundant harvest of Washington-grown heirloom tomatoes. While the fall harvest season seems far off in the future, TomatoFare West usually rounds up a few most excellent local chefs to create tomato-based bites.
