The pop-ups continue to proliferate. Here's a guide to one-off and recurring specialty dinners in the coming weeks. What are we missing?
On Monday nights, Hitchcock chef Brendan McGill teams up with cook/pizzaiolo Brandon Thompson to change the Euro-meets-Northwest Bainbridge Island restaurant into a den of Neapolitan-style pizza. The menu of pies is lengthy and ranges from a classic margherita to configurations that showcase housemade meats (lambcetta, pepperoni, chorizo, and more). The menu also contains lots of Italianate nonpizza bites, like dainty meatballs, tuna conserva, and octopus. This pop-up is so fancy it has its own website.
Bloom Bento (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays)
Three days a week, Jason Harris sets up shop at Kylie's Pizza to make cunning takeaway bento boxes for your lunchtime pleasure. I still can't get over the fact that his recent offerings included pieces of baked ham shaped like tiny pigs. I mean, come on. How can you not eat that? Feral Feasts (April 15)
On the third Monday of each month, Grub chef Joel Jester sets aside his regular duties to do his thing as Mr. Fox, keeper of a Spanish-meets-Asian menu full of dishes like zaru soba and tortilla Espagnola. His meals are four courses and served family style. Get tickets for the next gathering, April 15 from 5:30 to 9, right over here (they’re $45 apiece).
Tanakasan (April 20 & 21)
When Tom Douglas was preparing to open Cuoco he held a few preview dinners to get feedback on dishes (and drum up a little buzz; T-Doug's no fool). Now he's doing the same for Tanakasan, the central eatery in his upcoming Assembly Hall project at Sixth and Lenora. The two pop-ups will be held April 20 and 21. They're $50 apiece and full of tastes like shoyu and tonkotsu ramen, twice-fried wings, and something called riceicles. If these dinners are anything like the Cuoco ones, expect Douglas to hold court and lead a large-scale, free-form discussion while you eat. Which honestly is a lot of fun. Tickets and info here.
Big Trouble in Little Uncle (April 21)
I first heard about this one over at Eater Seattle and it may win the award for best pop-up name ever. Little Uncle owners Wiley and PK have hired a new cook at their stellar little broom closet of a Thai spot on Madison. His name is David Gurewitz, previously a sous at Spinasse, and starting April 21 he’s running the show for a special Hong Kong-style pop-up brunch menu every Sunday. Irbille Edibles (April 29)
Irbille Donia (also a partner in Kraken Congee) brings his modern Filipino food back to Olivar on April 29. You can usually find him here on the last Monday of the month; keep tabs on his Facebook page for the next round of menus and details.
Kraken Congee (May 6)
These guys packed Grub at their April 1 debut. Kraken returns May 6 with a new menu of rice porridge with fixings like roasted pork belly, five-spice duck confit, or pork-stuffed squid. Dinner will be at Grub once again, but come early—the first iteration was largely sold out by 8pm.
