Back in February, the folks at the Tokyo Dog food truck held an event attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the most expensive hot dog.
Today owner Eugene Woo called, jubilant with the news that Tokyo Dog has indeed taken the title with its $169 extravaganza of butter teriyaki grilled onions, maitake mushrooms, shaved black truffles, thinly sliced Wagyu beef, Paddlefish caviar, foie gras, and Japanese mayo, all heaped upon a 12-inch Bavarian Meats smoked cheese bratwurst on toasted bun.
It took more than 20 weeks for the Guinness folks to process the evidence packet (that's literally the term) Woo submitted. Earning a Guinness World Record seemingly involves more paperwork than a marriage or a mortgage. It requires signatures from witnesses (in this case Sushi Kappo Tamura's Taichi Kitamura and Maneki's Jean Nakayama), photos, videos, a receipt from at least one sale, and signatures from an accountant and a lawyer.
Anyone desirous of eating this record-breaking dog can pre-order one by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org; the truck needs two weeks' notice. All proceeds benefit the Red Cross.
Even if you don't have that kind of cash to drop on encased meats, Tokyo Dog is absolutely worth a visit for its lineup of brats and franks bedecked with Japanese toppings like furikake, tonkatsu sauce, plum sauce, bonito flakes, and nori.
