Drinking Games Can Be Craft Too
A Portland artist releases a deck of cards featuring sketches of local breweries.
Before the smart phone eroded their appeal, playing cards were a frequent companion for the mentally engaged drinker. PDX-based artist Aaron Voronoff Trotter knows this, so he sat down with a sketchbook in dozens of area taprooms to produce a deck of cards bearing illustrations of 52 of them. His ink renderings include the biggies (Fremont Brewing is the jack of hearts) and the small and culty (Poulsbo’s Valholl Brewing is the three of clubs). Suits are organized geographically, so the deck functions as a checklist for local brewery exploration. You can look up all these spots on your phone—and play solitaire while you’re at it—but anyone who prefers craft beer for its artistry and local ethos should appreciate a deck of cards that shares those values.
