A Critic’s Guide to Seattle Restaurant Week 2014
How are you going to pick which restaurant deal to go for?
Last night marked the kickoff of the Spring ’14 Seattle Restaurant Week—it should be called Seattle Restaurant Two Weeks but now I’m just being literal—and you’re staring at the list wondering which of the 178 restaurants should get your hard-earned $28 for three courses (Sundays through Thursdays).
If I didn’t eat out for a living, the following are the joints I’d be aiming for—broken down by category. I just might anyway.
Much Loved Neighborhood Haunts Bar Cotto (charcuterie, wood-fired pizza, and Italian cocktails from Ethan Stowell), Betty (Queen Anne’s home-away-from-home), Eva (careful and charming in Wallingford), Frank’s Oyster House and Champagne Parlor (soulful and adorable in Ravenna), Marjorie (makes Capitol Hill feel like a neighborhood), Plaka Estiatorio (humble Greek in Ballard), and Stumbling Goat Bistro (just keeps being terrific)
Bring a Date Head for the atmo-rich Tin Table (in the Oddfellows Building in Pike/Pine), Toulouse Petit (for plenty of noisy beautiful-people scene and great Creole food), Crow (very solid food in a swanky atmo across from Seattle Center), Le Petit Cochon (‘cuz nothing says loving like a “phat ass pork chop”), Serafina (wrote the book on sexy), and LloydMartin (a careful, intimate treasure atop Queen Anne).
DayDining Check out the Seattle Restaurant Week website for a list of the restaurants serving $15 three-course lunches. Make special note of Cuoco, MistralKitchen, and TanakaSan in the South Lake Union environs, La Spiga on Capitol Hill, and Lecosho on the Harbor Steps.
Newish so I’m Curious 4649 Yoroshiku Japanese Restaurant (Wallingford ramen), Dulce’s (now in its third address at 19th and Madison), Kaisho (Bellevue’s Asian-fusion reincarnation of Boom Noodle), Cafe Parco (in the sweet little house Madison Park Cafe used to occupy), Red Cow (Ethan Stowell’s steakhouse in Madrona), and Old Sage (I’ve been to the latest from the Spur Gastropublicans, but I’m intrigued to see how this one’s shaking down).
What?! You haven’t been to…? And here are the spots on the list that qualify as must-visits in this town. If you haven’t been to these, what better time than Seattle Restaurant Week to cross them off your bucket list: Crush, La Bete, Loulay, Monsoon, Poppy, Restaurant Zoe, Shanik, Tilth, and that surefire Spanish stunner, Harvest Vine.
