This Week in Happy Hour: Around the World
From India to France, and on to Puerto Rico, and Greece...all with drink specials.
Vij's Amazonian sibling has its own lineup of nuanced dishes from chef Meeru Dhalwala, built on deep and nuanced spices. Happy hour goes quickly—4 to 5:30 Monday through Friday—so be speedy with your order from the $5 appetizer menu. Items include lentil and potato pakoras, potato- and pepper-filled samoas, and the miniature crepes known as puras. A few wines, drafts, and cocktails are also $5 each.
Tom Douglas's Greek-spirited restaurant pairs Mediterranean and North African dishes with local ingredients, including a menu of $7 kebabs during happy hour (weekdays 4 to 6). Other snacks on the menu run about $4 to $6, and range from heirloom citrus salad with candied hazelnuts to the garlic smashed potatoes that frequent the breakfast menu. Drink specials include $4 beers, $6 wines, and the $7 Lola martini, barrel aged and complete with a feta-stuffed olive. Or maybe some $6 ouzo?
Bastille Cafe and Bar
Since the doors opened, Ballard's Northwest-tinged French bistro has sported a serious happy hour scene. From 4:30 to 6pm daily (and 10 to midnight Sunday through Thursday) order bistro staples like a croque madame or petite moules frites, and seasonal plates like the socca galette (sprouted greens, green chickpeas, charred spring onion, horseradish yogurt) for $8. As for drinks: carafes of red or white wine are $10 and happy hour cocktails like a French 75 or whiskey buck are $7 or $8.
Seattle has plenty of Thai joints, but Bai Pai in Ravenna, with its traditional Thai art, bar area, and white tablecloths, feels slightly nicer than your ordinary hole-in-the-wall. The happy hour served in the lounge consists of a huge list of appetizers that all cost less than $5. The lineup includes chicken satay, calamari with peppers, crab wontons, papaya salad with shrimp, and an avocado green curry. Happy hour is 4 to 7 Sunday, Wedesday, and Thursday and 4 to close Monday and Tuesday.Wines, cocktails, and drafts are under $4.
Puerto Rican flavors (including plenty of rum cocktails) are served up in a sunny Ballard space deftly painted to look like Old San Juan. Happy hour is 3 to 6pm and 10 to 1am daily and features cheap dishes made with plenty of rice, beans, plantains, shrimp, and other fresh seafood. Wines, drafts, and bottles start at $3.50, and $4 mojitos are available during the late-night happy hour.
