A Weeknight Wine Pick from Vino Verite's Dave Egan
An unconventional blend of mourvèdre, grenache and cab that goes great with a juicy grilled burger.
When some of his good friends bought West Seattle Cellars in 2000, Dave Egan got his first exposure to great wine. He was immediately seduced by the complexity and diversity of wine and wine culture, and became a regular at West Seattle Cellars’ weekly wine tastings. One evening the staff was short-handed and asked Egan to pitch in. His passion took off from there. In 2008, he cofounded his own wine shop, Vino Verité, in Capitol Hill, where he aims to help people find the most delicious, value-driven wine possible.

Gilbert Cellars 2012 “Uncle Cragg's The Pilgrim. While the Gilbert family is fairly new to winemaking, they have been in the fruit growing business for almost a century. Wine is all about the fruit that goes into it, so it’s no surprise that Gilbert Cellars made excellent wine, and reasonably priced, right from the beginning. The Pilgrim is a blend of mourvèdre, grenache and cabernet sauvignon. It’s made especially for us in the Western Washington market, and it’s a terrific wine for the price. We showed it at one of our weekly tastings a few weeks ago, and it was a huge hit! The wine is an unconventional blend, but all the components complement each other nicely. Mourvèdre gives the wine an appealing spicy note, grenache brings bright fruit flavors to the mix, and cabernet adds a little backbone. This wine is mercifully light on the oak treatment. The neutral barrels used for this wine add little or no overt oak flavor, allowing the excellent quality fruit to come through. This wine would be just fantastic with a juicy grilled burger.
