Washington State 2014 Winter Olympics Viewing Guide
Follow home state athletes like J.R. Celski as they compete in the Winter Games in Sochi.
The 2014 Winter Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies start this Friday, February 7, and there are plenty of home state Olympians to cheer on in Sochi. Washington State boasts eight athletes competing this Olympiad in a variety of disciplines. Heading the pack is short track speed skater J.R. Celski, a two-time bronze medalist who grew up in Federal Way and co-produced and co-wrote the Seattle hip hop scene documentary The Otherside. He’ll compete in four events in Sochi and hopes to carry on Apolo Anton Ohno’s legacy of Federal Way short track speed skating stars.
Team USA’s cross country skiing contingent is Washington heavy, including Winthrop’s brother-sister pair of Erik and Sadie Bjornstien. Joining them is Leavenworth’s Torin Koos and another Winthrop native, Brain Gregg. Woodinville’s Christian Niccum will rocket down the hill as a doubles luge participant. Rounding out the Washingtonian representation are freestyle skiers Patrick Deneen of Cle Elum and Bellingham’s Angeli Vanlaanen. Deneen specializes in the moguls, while Vanlaanen competes in the halfpipe, a new event to this year’s Games.
To help maximize your cheering effort, we’ve complied NBC’s TV schedule for the Washingtonian members of Team USA. All events are tape delayed unless otherwise noted and many will require fans to burn the midnight oil. (Note: Which athletes will compete in which cross-country skiing events has yet to be determined, but based on their competitive history, the ones listed below are likely to included some of the aformentioned skiiers.)
