Ben Sherwood came to Seattle by way of a ship: After sailing the South Pacific for three years, a boatmate from Federal Way convinced him to move to the Emerald City. Now he is the head of liquor, beer, and wine purchasing for Blind Pig Bistro.
Sherwood’s wine fascination began with a strict French sommelier in Colorado and continued through attending Northwest Wine Academy at South Seattle Community College. A former employee at Matt’s in the Market and former manager of Marjorie, Sherwood continues to soak up vino knowledge and share it with the rest of us.
So Ben Sherwood, what should I drink tonight?
One of the wines I am really digging right now is the Wysling Reserva 2009, a blend of malbec, tempranillo, mourvedre, and grenache with just a dash of carmenere. This Yakima Valley Ava blend greets your palate with blackberries, currants, and a bit of vanilla, silky, smoky spice lingers in the mouth for a long lush finish. I have been a fan of Mark Wysling’s wines for a few years now. He's a great guy who makes delicious, affordable wine. He started with the Parajas Cellars label, focusing entirely on Spanish varietals. Wysling is his reserve label allowing him to use more international grapes as is evident in this wine. This reserve blend tastes lovely right now, and pairs well with pork, duck, and spicy foods. Enjoy it with friends.
