This Week in Happy Hour: Sake Edition
Booze holidays are always a good excuse to go out, and National Sake Day is on October 1.
National Sake Day is next Tuesday, October 1, and we think that's reason to celebrate. Sake Nomi, a sake retail shop and tasting bar in Pioneer Square, stretches out the sake celebration for a few weeks, calling it “Saketoberfest” and holding special events and tastings. On the actual holiday at the shop, Phinney Ridge-based Cedar River Brewing will release its first bottles of sake to Seattle. And the owners of Sake Nomi will bring out the kansuke—also know as a sake warmer—from summer hibernation for the first hot sake of the autumn season.
In honor of this booze holiday let us rejoice with lots of sushi, Sapporo, and sake on happy hour.
Umi Sake House
The dining area at this Belltown sushi house has front and back “porch” seating with lofty ceilings and natural light. Modeled after a traditional Japanese country house it’s a serene place to enjoy happy hour everyday from 4 to 6pm, and late night from 11pm to 1am Sunday through Thursday. One hot sake and two chilled are $5, along with $4 draft Sapporo and Kirin Ichiban. Grilled garlic short ribs, crunchy sushi rolls, and sushi sets are just some of the options ranging from $5 to $10 on the vast HH food menu.
Sister sushi house to Umi, Capitol Hill’s Momiji shares a happy hour food and drink menu, and isn’t lacking in atmosphere either. The dining area overlooks an enclosed open-air garden with Japanese maples and stone sculptures. Happy hour is daily from 4 to 6pm, with an extra hour until 7pm in the bar area.
Japonessa Sushi Cocina
It’s a happy hour celebration at this downtown sushi house from open (11:30 on weekdays, and Noon on Saturday and Sunday) to 6:30 in the dining area. Bar happy hour is 6:30 to 8pm and late night is 10pm to close. The list of specials is long ranging from $1 to $14, but don’t miss the calamari Japonessa with a sweet chili glaze, lightly fried, and served on a bed of greens.
Moshi Moshi Sushi
A huge faux cherry tree lights up this space on Ballard Ave. Early happy hour runs Monday though Saturday from 4 to 6pm, on Sunday it’s 3 to 6pm, but all day in the bar. A late run is from 9 to 11pm Monday though Thursday, with Friday and Saturday from 10 to midnight. There are $3, $4, $5, and $7 categories offering edamame, salmon skin hand rolls, spicy baked oysters, and five piece sashimi sets. Along with $7 choice cocktails—hello, wasabi bloody Mary—hot sake is $3 for a small and $6 for a large.
