Now Open in Belltown: Some Random Bar
That's the name, guys.
I got a reader tip recently (thanks LC!) that the obscurely titled Some Random Bar is officially open for business at 2604 First Ave in Belltown, the former home of C.S. Finnegan’s.
Owner Michael Maione says the name is somewhat an homage to Seinfeld : “The show about nothing kind of evolved into the idea of Some Random Bar, and not being about one specific thing.” In other words, Some Random Bar has TVs, but it’s not a sports bar. There’s a cocktail list and it’s full of fresh juices and housemade elements, but it’s not really a craft cocktail bar. The most apt description might be gastropub, but Maione’s not a fan of that term. And I’m not a fan of “barstaurant,” though it’s becoming a very Seattle concept, and the word seems apt here.
Maione and his wife and business partner Jean Wallace will be tending bar, while their chef Eric Sakai (most recently of the Four Seasons in Jackson Hole) serves up a seasonal menu of crab nachos, oxtails that have been slow-cooked, then fried, heirloom tomato salad, chocolate-dipped bacon strips, and house-smoked fish pate. And yes, the house pickle offering is listed as “some random jar.”
The list of 15 by-the-glass wines skews toward Washington and California, and most of the 11 draft beers are local, too. If you order a PBR tallboy, it comes wrapped in a paper bag, and if what you really want is a Ketel One and sugar-free Red Bull or a Malibu and pineapple, by god Maione will serve it up with nary a lip curl of judgment.
Maione attended UW, graduated in 1998, and drove across the country planning to spend maybe a year in Florida before returning to the Northwest. Along the way he met Wallace, and the two have spent the past 15 years working in fine dining, nightclubs, resorts, and even a Hard Rock Casino in Orlando and Miami, but this is the first place that’s been all their own.
Some Random Bar is open 4pm to 2am Tuesday through Sunday, and the kitchen stays open (dispensing the full menu) until 1:30 every night. Hours, menu, and such are here.
