Sean Sullivan's Wine of the Week: Julia’s Dazzle Rosé
A dazzling Horse Heaven Hills rosé to ring in spring.

What: Julia’s Dazzle Rosé Horse Heaven Hills 2012, $15

Why: Nothing says spring quite like pink wine, and the appropriately named Julia’s Dazzle Rosé is the ideal way to start the season.
A project from Long Shadows founder Allen Shoup and winemaker Gilles Nicault–though not bottled under the Long Shadows label, it’s single-vineyard pinot gris from the Benches (sometimes referred to as the Wallula Vineyard) with a splash of sangiovese added. Though pinot gris is generally thought of as a white wine, brief contact with the grape’s dark skins during fermentation gives this its pretty, pale salmon color.
It’s dry in style but the strawberry and melon flavors are so rich and full they give the perception of sweetness. What’s in the bottle is only part of the appeal here; the attractive bowling pin–shaped packaging adds to the fun.
