Recap: 'Game of Thrones' Premiere at Cinerama
From the red carpet to Lannister fist bumps.
$500. That’s how much an überfan of Game of Thrones offered to get into last night’s premiere at Seattle Cinerama. He had the wad of cash to prove it. Did anyone accept? I know a few people who turned him down, sidestepping the crazy to spend an hour watching season 3, episode one, before it airs March 31 (it's worth the wait) and getting a glimpse of several cast members in town for the event.
These were no bit characters: HBO trotted out Jon Snow, Jaime Lannister, Arya and Sansa Stark, along with the lovely queen-to-be Margaery Tyrell, wildling Ygritte, and Night’s Watch guardsman Samwell Tarly for a red-carpet walk. Consider this confirmation of Seattle’s geek cred—HBO Go has software engineering offices here, plus there’s the medieval dress–wearing fanbase willing to drop $500 to get in the door. Seattle hearts Game of Thrones in a big way and was rewarded in kind. (As was San Francisco the night before.) The afterparty at EMP was Westeros themed, complete with platters of meat on a stick, goblets of wine, a Game of Thrones beer (Lannister blonde, naturally), and a chance to have your picture taken on the Iron Throne used in the show. Sadly, and probably for their safety, the actors didn’t hang out with partygoers, but we had a chance to chat with them on the red carpet. View the slideshow for our favorite appearances and quotes of the night.
Speaking of good quotes: Showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff have a way with one-liners. We already knew they did justice to George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, the inspiration behind the multimillion-dollar Game of Thrones series, and we had a couple dozen questions to ask them—Have they read all the books? How do directors manage one episode that's shot in five different countries? Does George R. R. Martin work part-time as a deep-sea fisherman?
Instead, they arrived just in time to introduce the stars at the screening—with a bit of style:
Kit "quiet but deceptively powerful" Harington (Jon Snow)
Nikolaj "the best-looking man in Denmark" Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister)
Maisie "don't call her cute/the deadly" Williams (Arya Stark)
Sophie "talented and unpredictable" Turner (Sansa Stark)
John "whom I regularly beat in FIFA" Bradley (Samwell Tarly)
"the effervescent" Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell)
Rose "our very own wild ginger" Leslie (Ygritte) (winner!)
And what can we say about season 3 that won't spoil it? Just this: The dragons are bigger.
