11th Annual Barleywine Bacchanal
If you haven't already, join the Beveridge Place Pub in celebration of barleywine, an ale as strong as wine, but made from grain. The festivities began on the 23rd and will continue through Saturday, so its not too late to grab a glass or try a sample tray chosen from 30 different barleywines.
FRIDAY, March 1
Poverty Bay Wine Festival
If you don’t mind a bit of a trek, grab a designated driver and head down to Des Moines for the local Rotary Club’s ninth annual Poverty Bay Wine Festival. The three-day event at the historic Landmark On The Sound Event Center features live music, food, and wine tastes from 20 Northwest wineries. One day or weekend passes are available online or at Corky Cellars (drivers get a special discount), and festivities kick off at 5 on Friday.
Penn Cove MusselFest
Jump on a ferry to the island town of Coupeville this weekend to experience Penn Cove’s 27th annual MusselFest, complete with chowder tastings, mussel farm tours, cooking demonstrations, and a beer garden with live music. And if you’re in for a little competition, the first person to consume three 16-ounce cups of mussels on Saturday and Sunday will flaunt the MusselFest Crown.
Washington Winemaker Mixer
Purple Cafe is kicking off Washington Wine Month right with a mixer at Cast Iron Studios in Bellevue. Converse with guests and six winemakers (from Avennia, Efeste, Hestia, Obelisco Estate, Scarborough, and Tempus) over light appetizers and, of course, wine tastes. Space is limited, so call 206-838-3853 to make a reservation.
National Pig Day
A handful of local food trucks are offering Maker’s Mark Bourbon–infused custom treats to celebrate this pork lover's holiday. Happy Grillmore is serving a pulled pork sandwich with bourbon slaw or try the Pinky’s Maker’s Mark Bourbon Triple Threat Pulled Pork from Pinky’s Kitchen. Check @happygrillmore and @pinkyskitchen on Twitter for their location on March 1.
SUNDAY, March 3
3rd Annual Golden Grape Awards
Willows Lodge Wine Director Matt Davis gathers over 50 Woodinville wineries to compete for the best sauvignon blanc, Chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, syrah, Rhone-style blend, and Bordeaux-style blend. Enjoy 15 tastes for $15 (in advance, or $25 at the door) from 3 to 5, followed by the awards presentation.
Dine Around Seattle
In its 11th year, Dine Around Seattle is partnering with FareStart to support the local restaurant community. Beginning on March 3 and running through the 28th, 47 participating restaurants will offer three-course prix fixe dinners for $30. Make reservations at using the OpenTable widget at the bottom of their website.
Toss Like a Boss
Ballard Pizza Company’s Israel Santiago, along with seven other pizzaiolis from places like Big Mario’s, Rione XIII, and Zayda Buddy’s compete for the title of “Pizza Toss Boss” on March 10. Scarf down all-you-can-eat pizza and salad as you score the tossing professionals on speed, style, height of toss, and best looking pie. Donations ($20 is suggested) go to the winner’s charity of choice.
2013 Washington Cask Beer Festival
After selling out for several years in a row, the Washington Brewers Guild has moved the Cask Beer Festival on March 30 to the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall for two sessions that will accommodate twice the number of craft beer enthusiasts. Over 40 Washington breweries will show off their one-of-a-kind handcrafted cask-conditioned beers and snacks will be available for purchase. Buying advanced tickets is still encouraged and can be done online or at select outlets (99 Bottles in Federal Way, Bottleworks and Full Throttle Bottles in Seattle, and Malt and Vine in Redmond).
