As rumored, Thaiku is indeed occupying, 6705 Greenwood Avenue North, the address previously home to Gaspare. According to the press release, the 45-seat space includes a wee version of apothecary-styled cocktail bar Fu Kun Wu.
Way back in December 2011, the Thai restaurant closed the doors on its original location on Ballard Ave (that spot is becoming Ballard Annex Oyster House). Gone also was Fu Kun Wu, the adjacent lounge that charmed its way into Esquire’s list of Best Bars in America.
In its new spot, the restaurant is known as Mai (or new) Thaiku and promises a “more authentic experience,” blending dishes from the original Thaiku with some family recipes from the staff, most of whom also worked at the Ballard location. Oh, and nothing is deep fried, so don't even ask for crab rangoon.
Some new categories on the menu: bar snacks/drinking-friendly bites, grilled skewers, and seven varieties of green papaya salad. The bar area pours Fu Kun Wu classics like the Oolong Teani and cocktails made with yohimbe, an herbal extract that’s reportedly such a libido enhancer and stimulant that customers are limited to one drink per person.
Mai Thaiku is open seven days a week, and happy hour and weekend lunch kick off February 25. Check out Facebook for more details and updates.
