This Week in Restaurant News: More Pho Less Gluten
Basically a slew of new places opened this week.
Brendan McGill’s new German beer hall officially opened this week, plying Pioneer Square denizens with German-style sausage and plenty of beer. Hours are 11 to 11...and a little earlier on big game days.
Capitol Hill has a new outpost for fresh-pressed juice and breakfast and lunches that manage to be both virtuous and tasty. The soft opening is today, with the official opening on Monday, November 18.
The chill outside is no reason to forego ice cream. Especially when it comes from this new Ballard "atelier," an outgrowth of the much-loved ice cream truck. In addition to scoops, you can get pastries, push pops, and hand-dipped ice cream bars.
The new (and separate) bar in the back of Ballard Annex Oyster House sent word it's opening on Friday, November 15—aka today. Here's our report from an early visit to the space. Sailor-inspired cocktails include the Full Mast (Yohimbe aquavit, lemon, simple syrup, Champagne, and an oyster) and plenty of actual grog.
So...this was a busy week for openings. The latest installment from Skillet founder Joshua Henderson is now open and serving burgers and upscale tavern fare (oh, and plenty of booze) in the heart of Woodinville.
Dulces Bistro and Wine
After 19 years in Madrona and a short stint downtown the bistro and wine bar has resurfaced on Capitol Hill at 19th and Madison, according to Capitol Hill Seattle blog. The restaurant now has a full bar and the wine menu has been updated. It’s open for dinners Tuesday-Saturday.
The Belgian-inspired nanobrewery has moved from its tiny Phinney Ridge home to a much larger space (with a tasting room) in Greenwood, according to the PhinneyWood blog. Brewers Chris and Lori Engdahl will have batches brewing in December and an opening date by the end of the year.
James Sherrill moves to Re:public
Seattle Met favorite James Sherrill has made a move from chef at high-end Restaurant Zoe to chef at the more casual Re:public, in South Lake Union. At the Amazonian hot spot, Sherrill is working on revamping the menu; he has already debuted some happy hour items like bahn mi sliders with duck confit, tamarind barbeque sauce, and Sriracha aioli.
Just in time for the cold months, South Lake Union gets a new pho spot. Pho Cyclo also has cheap bahn mi and will be offering lunch delivery (weekdays from 10-2) for orders of $20 or more. The opening is scheduled for November 20.
The newest installment from the inimitable Linda Derschang is scheduled to open in December, according to a recent dispatch. It’s billed as a neighborhood café serving seasonal food, and looks to be more in tune with Smith or Oddfellows as opposed to the bar scenes at Linda’s or King’s Hardware.
THE PASTRY THAT SHALL NOT BE NAMED
Ba Bar's: Double Happiness
Okay, now it has a name. Ba Bar brought the Cronut™ to Seattle, but after a short hiatus, plus receiving a letter from the pastry's creator crying copyright issues, it's back. And it has a new name, Double Happiness. The part-doughnut-part-croissant creation will be in the pastry case on Saturdays and Sundays. For the formal reintroduction, Ba Bar will be giving them away while supplies last, Saturday, November 23.
