I had just been wondering when this one was going to be around again ... and then it showed up in my inbox: this year's annual Baby and Co. customer sale.
For the past couple of years, shop owner Jill Donnelly collects her best customer's best cast-offs and organizes a sort of pop-up consignment shop, with some proceeds benefitting the Mockingbird Society.
This year's shopping party (it does feel that way) is a two day, two venue affair: gals who are into Commes de Garcon, Lilith, Girbaud (pictured here), Bruno Cucinelli, Lanvin, Yohji Yamamoto, and the like will want to make themselves free on Friday, August 17 from 9 to 7 when the sale is at Baby and Co., and/or Sunday, August 19 from 10 to 4 for the Fremont Market offering.
Expect prices to be fair if not total steals; as an example, last year I walked away with a really great Alexander Wang jacket for about $80 and a white leather pullover (white leather pullover!) for about the same amount.
In terms of strategy: The early bird always gets the raddest stuff, sure, but that's a subjective thing, isn't it? Pay close attention to the tags; Donnelly usually uses an initial system, so that if you find a Chanel dress that fits your body and your lifestyle and it's got, say "E.S." on the attached ticket, chances are good that you'll like the other things that "E.S." has in the sale. (The challenge is just finding them.)
Also: smart shoppers always wear a leotards or other under layers that allow for quick and easy changes. Safe to say the Fremont Market will not be specially outfitted with plush fitting rooms for the occassion.
Oh, and this is an important one: Bring cash. It's the only form of payment accepted.
