If you have benefited from massage therapy, acupuncture, or any form of naturopathic care, you can be thankful that you live in Washington. Our state has the most licensed naturopathic physicians (NDs) in the nation, making it a longtime leader in the field. The state legislature further guaranteed the quality and consistency of care by establishing the first-ever state Board of Naturopathy in July 2011. “The big development is this puts naturopathic medicine on par with other primary health care professionals. We’ve kind of been the stepchild, and this is a sign of greater establishment and integration,” says Robert May, ND, executive director of the Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians. Issues regarding licensing, educational requirements, and general oversight of the profession will now be overseen by a seven-member board of NDs and citizens.
