Where to Drink (and Eat) on Doomsday
It's the end of the world as we know it. Or so say the Mayans (and, technically, REM). Here's where you can toast our impending negation.
According to the Mayans, December 21 is....yeah, you're probably sick of hearing about this by now, too. But you might want to consider making a rip-roaring night of it anyway. You know, just in case. These establishments can oblige. What other events are happening around town?
Maria Hines's third restaurant (Sicilian and southern Italian. Exciting. But I digress) opens on December 21. Ill-fated omen? Hardly. Hines considers it an excuse to throw a doomsday party on her first night in business. Agrodolce will do a special $65 four-course prix-fixe menu that night, with wine pairings for $30. Hines encourages diners to come dressed as your favorite spirit animal...which seems perfectly normal considering the restaurant is located in Fremont. You can already call Agrodolce at 206-547-9707 to book a table; neighborhood drum school Conga Joy will set the mood.
Airways Brewing Company
The Kent brewery made an entire beer, Final Departure, dedicated to the end of days. Now the last 15 cases of this rich, boozy imperial stout has been released, and Airways is toasting the apocalypse with a big party on December 20. The "End of Days" party will be all about special barrel-aged versions of this already extreme beer. The taproom is open from 3pm until midnight.
"The end is beer," quoth the brewery. I kind of loathe puns, but that one is pretty enjoyable. Elysian planned way ahead when it comes to doomsday drinking. On the 21st of each month in 2012, Elysian has issued one of its "12 Beers of the Apocalypse" series. And, of course, December marks the final installment, the Doom Golden Treacle Pale. Comic artist Charles Burns did those arresting labels, by the way. On Thursday, December 20, the cheerily named Apocalypse Doom End of the World Party begins at 6 at the brewery's Elysian Fields SoDo location with the official tapping of the latest release. It's is a final chance to try all 12 of these creations. There will be a very few mixed cases of these beers available for sale.
Billed as the "first annual end of the world party," Linda's is counting down to impending doom with specials on burgers and boilermakers, DJ Jen Joyce, and assorted merriment. Festivities begin at 9pm Friday December 21 and last until 2am or the earth's implosion...whatever comes first.
