Introducing... Kyle Loven, age 29
Currently A next-gen Seattle puppeteer who dabbles in dark magic a la Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal or Labyrinth.
Claim to Fame Received grants from the Jim Henson Foundation and the Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs to develop Loss Machine—a world premiere at On the Boards.
What is a Loss Machine? Visual art and live performance. A “Rube Goldberg–esque set” that Loven manipulates. A city of lost things, each with its own story.
BOOKS & TALKS
“Inelegantly, and without my consent, time passed.”
—Miranda July in her 2007 short story collection, No One Belongs Here More Than You. The reigning queen of quirk (and, naturally, a former Portlandian), July condenses her life as a performance artist, writer, filmmaker, and musician into a talk entitled “My Autobiography” at Benaroya. Thankfully, she’s only in her 30s; if this were Patti Smith, the talk could last as long as a cricket match (and it would be glorious).
Dec 5 • Benaroya Hall, lectures.org
ART AS GIFTS
Ghost Gallery’s sixth annual Holiday Miniature Art Extravaganza is exactly what it sounds like: a wild assortment of tiny collages, three-inch embroidered hoops that say “Blerg,” and miniature paintings no bigger than a book cover (please don’t ask us what books are). They make great holiday gifts (hint, hint, help an artist out).
