Sherman Alexie and Friends Talk Basketball
Literature hits the hardwood at Seattle University.
In addition to being one of the notable writers in the Northwest, Sherman Alexie is also a big hoops fan. Now that basketball season is in full swing (though judging by their early play, nobody told the UW Huskies), he's gathering a few likeminded scribes to chat about their passion for the game.
Elliott Bay Book Company hosts tonight's bookish basketball event, Four on the Floor, at Seattle University's Connolly Center. Alexie will be joined by Spokane-based writers Shann Ray (American Masculine) and Jess Walter (Beautiful Ruins), as well as poet Natalie Diaz (When My Brother Was an Aztec). Beyond just being a hoops fan, Diaz was a former basketball star at Old Dominion who even played a few seasons professionally in Europe and Asia.
While the conversation could go in any number of directions, considering the Spokane-heavy lineup, there will likely be at least a little Gonzaga basketball talk (Alexie himself even attended Gonzaga for a spell). Gonzaga's men's team is 6-0 and ranked no. 12 after crushing their early season competition, so there's plenty of fodder for discussion (GU alum editor's note: GO ZAGS!!!).
