Spun, a Company Devoted to Organic Cotton Candy, Launches
The classic confection gets an artisanal upgrade courtesy Tilth chef David White and pal Cristie Schrader.
Cristie Schrader has always loved cotton candy—"It's pretty, youthful, and nostalgic," she enthuses. So about four years ago Schrader, a Washington State University grad with a degree in apparel design, had the idea of creating a company dedicated to the confection. It wasn't until early 2012, however, that she partnered with friend and Tilth chef David White to come up with a whimsical line of flavors that includes lavender, rose, and blood orange.
All three were on hand this past weekend during the launch party Schrader hosted for Spun Cotton Candy Company. Between the funky Sam Fosse headpieces, blue-and-white striped uniforms, custom cotton candy cocktails by Oola Distillery, and ukulele player, the tone of the party was, fittingly, quite fanciful. Each flavor was topped with a creative garnish (a dusting of cinnamon graced the blood orange), and Schrader plans to soon tap into the savory (she mentioned mesquite and basil).
Spun is available for private parties and event catering. As a minimum 30 pre-made cones cost $90, while onsite spinning is $215; custom orders are priced case-by-case. For more information on Spun, check out the Facebook page. And, as Schrader said at the launch party, go “get some fluff.”
