Attorney General Rob McKenna, who is announcing his candidacy for Governor tonight at Sammamish High School, can cross a potential opponent of his list already: US Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA, 8 ).
Reichert told SeattlePi.com that he was "excited" that "we have a great candidate for governor" in response to the McKenna announcement. He said "I’ll be there to help however I can."
Reichert's support indicates he won't be running for governor himself.
Reichert's name has been floated as a possible candidate for Governor in 2012. Recent polls even showed him beating US Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA, 1), the likely Democratic frontrunner, 46-44. (McKenna beat Inslee 48-41 in the same poll.) Politico noted last week that Reichert may postpone a run for Governor after getting a coveted slot on the house ways and means committee.
Though McKenna will be the first Republican to officially declare a gubernatorial candidacy for 2012, Seattle Port Commissioner Bill Bryant, also a Republican, has expressed interest in running.
