The initiative would put the state liquor control board in charge of regulating and taxing marijuana, and could bring in as much as $300 million per biennium for health care and drug abuse programs, its backers claim.
In an interview with PubliCola earlier this month, Gov. Chris Gregoire came out against the initiative, arguing that it would lead to "a bunch of federal busts." (Pot is still illegal under federal law). "If you want to legalize marijuana, let’s do it at the federal level," Gregoire said.
